YOUR DATA
Your privacy.

Saved library
Bookmarks are stored in local storage on your browser, without an account. Article saves include the public editorial brief and its source link; resource and newsletter saves contain links and titles. We do not upload your saved library, use it to profile you or connect it to your newsletter subscription. It is separate from your Read and Opened markers. Saves are specific to the device, browser and website address. Clearing site data or closing a private browsing session may remove them. You can remove individual saves, download a backup and restore it on the Saved library page. Backup files reveal your reading interests, so keep them somewhere suitable. Original-source links contact the publisher only when opened.
Reading preferences and welcome tour
Reading preferences, your collection layout and whether you have dismissed or finished the welcome tour are stored in this browser. The tour stores only a dismissal or completion flag; it does not identify you or send tour activity to the server. You can replay it from Menu. Clearing site data resets these choices.
Reading history and community counts
Opened and Read markers are saved in this browser only, using local storage. They do not sync across devices, form a public profile or connect to your newsletter subscription. You can clear them in Reading settings or by clearing browser data.
The site records aggregate article and section openings from 16 October 2026, with other item types added on 17 October 2026. Count requests contain only the item or section ID, with no account, email or reader identifier. Repeated opens during one page visit are suppressed in memory; later visits may count again. Totals indicate activity, not unique readers, completed reading or quality. They are not used to rank the editorial selection.
To limit automated counter abuse, separate records hold an hourly changing keyed hash of the network address, a request total and an expiry time. They contain no item or section IDs. These records expire within two hours and are removed in batches during subsequent count requests. The application does not store raw network addresses or individual reading trails with its counts. Aggregate totals are retained for the life of the resource.
Search
Search uses public editorial content. We do not create a personal search-history profile or link search words to newsletter subscriptions. Search words appear in page addresses and may remain in browser history or infrastructure logs. Avoid entering private participant information or other sensitive material.
Newsletter: what we collect and why
The sign-up form collects your email address and records when you requested and confirmed a subscription, which consent wording you accepted, and any unsubscribe request. We use this to deliver the weekly newsletter with your consent and to respect your preferences. A subscriber list is never displayed publicly.
Email confirmation and control
Your subscription starts only after you confirm your email address. Every weekly email must include an unsubscribe link that works without an account. Unsubscribing stops future newsletter deliveries immediately; it cannot recall a message already sent. You can also contact Liz to withdraw consent or request deletion.
Reference downloads
If you choose to download a reference, your browser requests its citation details from Crossref using the paper’s DOI. Crossref receives the request and your network address; the request does not include your newsletter address, reading history or the reading-room page address. No reference request is made until you click download. Paperpile and other reference-manager extensions operate under their own privacy policies.
Sharing links
Social sharing controls are ordinary links. We do not load social-network tracking scripts or embedded widgets. If you choose a sharing service, it receives the public page address and handles the interaction under its own privacy terms. Copy link stays on your device.
Services used
The website is hosted through OpenAI Sites with Cloudflare infrastructure. Resend processes your address and message content to deliver confirmation messages and newsletter emails. The sending domain is configured in Resend’s EU region; this does not mean all processing is restricted to the EU. Providers may process data internationally under their own safeguards and terms.
Retention and protection
Confirmation links expire after 24 hours. Unconfirmed requests older than seven days are removed during subsequent sign-up processing. Confirmed addresses and consent records are retained while subscribed. An unsubscribe record is kept to prevent further sends unless you confirm a new subscription; you may ask for deletion.
To limit automated abuse, the site stores short-lived keyed hashes derived from addresses and, where supplied by the hosting service, network addresses. These rate-limit records expire after two hours and are removed during subsequent sign-up processing. The newsletter code does not log email addresses or confirmation tokens.
Tracking and other uses
Resend email-open and click tracking are disabled for this sending domain. We do not sell subscriber details or use them for unrelated mailing lists. Reading preferences on the website stay in your browser. Infrastructure providers may retain security and delivery logs under their own policies.
