The finding or development

The review links useful AR assistance to retained user control. Some fully autonomous adaptations produced stress, distraction or distrust. Its proposed framework begins with control decisions before choosing what to adapt and how to sense inputs.

What supports it

Peer-reviewed systematic review: 798 records screened, 241 full texts assessed, 24 studies synthesised qualitatively.

Reviewed: Publisher page and accepted PDF: methods, synthesis, design framework and limitations.

Why it matters for design

Use it to question when an interface should intervene and how users can direct adaptation.

Read with this in mind

Search ended March 2024 and used two databases and English texts. The synthesis is not a pooled causal estimate or a new test of the proposed framework; newer systems are outside its scope.
