UX Observatory reflects the broad, forward-looking approach of Falmouth University’s MA User Experience Design, connecting research and practice across sectors, disciplines and emerging technologies. It encourages students to look beyond today’s interfaces and develop the critical judgement, ethical awareness and practical skills needed to shape future experiences.
Connecting the course and the reading room
UX Observatory reflects the broad view of user experience that Liz Coulter-Smith brings to the MA User Experience Design she leads at Falmouth University. Experience takes shape across social, cultural, physical and technological contexts: in public services and healthcare, creative practice and industry, and our relationships with emerging technologies.
The reading room connects these fields through research, design practice and ethical enquiry. It supports students in asking whose experience matters, how evidence informs a design decision, and what responsibilities arise when technology changes the way we live, learn and work.
Preparing for a changing field
AI, robotics, immersive environments and biological interfaces raise new questions for experience design. Preparing for these developments requires critical judgement alongside practical skills: evaluating claims, understanding people and contexts, testing ideas, and deciding when a technology serves a worthwhile purpose.
Use the Observatory to connect established UX methods with emerging areas of practice, compare evidence across sectors and develop informed questions for your own projects.
The online MA brings together design experimentation, user research, collaboration and critical reflection. See the University’s course page for the current course structure, study arrangements, entry requirements, fees and application details.
Online events hosted by Falmouth University. Both sessions are listed at 16:00–17:00; confirm the time zone and booking details on the official event page.

Where Do You Fit in the Future of UX? Join Liz Coulter-Smith for a participatory session using the UX Futures Map to consider your interests, responsibilities and possible directions in a changing field.
Start with a question from your project. Follow the selected readings to their original sources, examine the methods and limitations, and connect your findings to a relevant sector. The glossary and research databases and journals can help you extend that enquiry.
UX Observatory is independently curated by Liz Coulter-Smith, Course Leader for the MA. Course information and event bookings are provided by Falmouth University through the official links above. Enrolled students should use their University learning environment for module materials, assessment and course communications.
